Announcing ILLUMINATE SALT LAKE! Utah’s Light Art and Technology Festival.
ILLUMINATE launches the first Augmented Reality and Virtual Public Art experience in Utah!
The Utah Arts Alliance announces the first annual ILLUMINATE SALT LAKE Festival November 10th & 11th at The Gateway Center and the Eccles Theater Plaza. This event invites the community to explore our city in entirely new ways and to see it in a whole new light, by illuminating our culture and community through art and technology.
The ILLUMINATE SALT LAKE Festival is a free two-day community art event and a celebration of innovation and imagination for the community, art lovers, and families. The festival features installations by more than 30 artists, live music and performances, kids activities, a kids short film fest, interactive light art demonstrations, virtual reality arts displays, food trucks, local brews & spirits and much more!
Festival locations include The Gateway, The Eccles Theater Regent Street Plaza, and Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA). Programming partners include Utah Film Center, Utah Division of Arts and Museums, The Leonardo, Salt Lake City Arts Council, Discovery Gateway, and Clark Planetarium. Over 50 artists and performers are involved in producing the festival.
Artists working with technology and using light as their medium will use the city as their canvas and create projection mapped artwork, light art displays and exhibits for the community to enjoy and experience a first of its kind experience.
The festival will also launch the new ILLUMINATE AR Augmented Reality app that will allow users to use their smartphones to have an enhanced experience with the artwork in augmented reality and discover virtual artworks that are only viewable through the app. In what is an historic technological milestone for Salt Lake City ILLUMINATE will be placing the first virtual public art pieces around Downtown SLC, 15 in total, plus an Augmented Reality experience with the over 30 featured art installations that will be displayed at the festival. The ILLUMINATE AR app also provides a gamified festival experience were users can find holographic robots hidden around the City, can unlock other games and check out the leaderboards of participants that have registered the most experiences at the festival. Participates that have registered all AR experiences at the festival will receive prizes.
Kids activities include the Kids Light Lab at Discovery Gateway, special educational demonstrations at Clark Planetarium, and Utah Film Center will present Tumbleweeds Lite, a kids shorts film festival.
On Saturday night as the festival winds down there is a special ticketed event called the AFTER GLO PARTY for those 21 and older. The AFTER GLO PARTY will be held at the Grand Hall at the Gateway and will feature top DJ’s and performers as well as projection mapped displays, light art installations and more.
ILLUMINATE Festival is produced by the non-profit Utah Arts Alliance. For more info visit illuminatesaltlake.org
